Check out the December issue of Strad magazine which has an article debating what is a fair salary for an orchestral player (with an interesting look at the salary levels at American orchestras compared with their UK counterparts). It also considers the economics of running an orchestra in a period of austerity.

In the same issue, Michael Quinn has a feature on the financial difficulties experienced by the Ulster Orchestra, whose chairman George Bain has stated bluntly: “If the orchestra disappeared, a good deal of our musical infrastructure would collapse”.
