mt-cover-winter-2014RIAM composition professor Kevin O’Connell has a review article in the latest issue of the Musical times looking at some recent publications on Luigi Dallapiccola and Harrison Birtwistle.

The case of Dallapiccola is interesting in that, as Kevin O’Connell notes: “modernism and totalitarianism, especially in its Fascist form share many unpleasant traits.” In fact Dallapiccola appeared to thrive as a composer under the Fascist regime, only revising his position when the later race laws came to threaten his wife, who was Jewish.
